Alistratis Caves are located in the region of Serres,
and is certainly worth taking the time to visit the
area.

The cave is thought to be one of the most beautiful
in Europe with outstanding caverns extending beyond
natures expectancy, with the impressive rock formations
revealing nature at its best and creating a power to
enchant all its visitors. |

The cavern is 3 km long, with 1km having already
been explored and thus visitors can walk the 1km through
the corridors and chambers on the guided tour. |

The stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are
red are highly decorative and remarkable throughout
the caves demonstrating that nature is able to create
beautiful ornaments. |

Situated 23km North West of the Centre of Drama, the Caves
are the longest in Greece, around 12km in length, with 8.5km
having already been explored. The Springs of Angitis form
an important part of the hydro system in the area with the
waters flowing from the mountainous areas of Falakro and Nevrokropi. |

The river Angitis flows through the cave forming ponds
with interesting insects and animals. The temperatures in
the cave are around 17 degrees C with the water at 13 degrees
c. |

These caves are well worth a visit, not just because of
the natural beauty of the caves but also the pleasant surroundings
of the area and the history of this destination. Archaeologists
have discovered remains of habitation in the form of fireplaces,
tools and other objects dating back as far as the Neolithic
period (4th MillenniumBCE). |
