The first signs of human existence in Drama date back some 30,000 years ago and this has been traced through the discovery of the Angitis River Caves. During these historical times, the race was referred to as "Thracians" who worshipped the God of wine, fertility of soil and ecstasy, the notorious "Dioynosis".

In 360BC in the area of "Krindes" the colonists from the Island of Thassos settled knowing the land was rich with metals, timber and agricultural potential. However the Father of Alexander the Great, King Phiilip captured the colony, naming it after himself "Phillipi" and during this hellenic period the City prospered.

However, during the Roman period, the the area around Drama and Kavala was witness to the famous battle of Phillipi in 42BC when the Romans defeated the site and settled creating an extensive colony of villages and farm houses. However, the story doesn't end here, in 49AD St Paul came to the settlement creating a very important Historical third Chapter and the first Christian Church of Europe.

Throughout its history the area of Macedonia has seen many struggles and wars against its neighbouring countries, mainly from Turkey and the Balkans. It wasn’t declared as independent from the Ottomans (Turkish) until 1913 when the area was finally liberated. Northern Greece suffered many losses during the world wars and this can still be felt in the hearts of the locals.

To this day the children parade through the streets watched by their proud parents and grandparents to celebrate the days of liberation. During the 1960's the area lost many of it's people who decided to emigrate mainly to West Germany in search of better economic stability as Macedonia had come to rely on agricultural activities, timber, tobacco and marble production.

Today there is a more cosmopolitan atmosphere growing in the area. Many people are returning to their homelands and the Cities have come to life once again. However it is re-assuring that in the Villages their remains a strong sense of the rich traditions and cultures. It is also interesting that agricultural products remain an important source of living for many in the area.
